How to Play a Simple Rhythm for a Drum Circle

Drum Circles are a lot of fun, but if you’ve never been to one before you might not know what to expect and be a little inhibited and nervous.

But, don’t worry! If you keep these things in mind you’ll have a great time and get a lot out of the experience.

What’s a Drum Circle Anyway?

A drum circle is a group of people with drums who learn to express themselves and to communicate with the other members of the by sharing in the music they are making with the drum. Drum Circles break down social barriers, and bring people together.

Do I have to be a musician to be in a Drum Circle?

Absolutely not! Drum Circles are not meant to be serious and stressful music making events or concerts. Everybody can play a drum and whatever you do with your drum is correct. The beauty is that you can never make a mistake in a drum circle. Everything is cool! The only possible mistake you could make is not to have fun.

I have to play in a drum circle soon and I don’t know what to do or what to play.

  • Keep it simple. You’re not expected to be a virtuoso on the drum. Just play what you feel
  • Don’t hit the drum too hard because it’s not necessary and you’ll just end up hurting your hands

Well done. Very simplified fun lesson.

  4. I’ve been going to the Texas Renfest for 8 years, its even where I met my husband. Even though I hang out at the drum circle, I’ve never participated. This past year I’ve been battling cancer. And ya know what? It’s time for me to drum! I practiced a little at a friend’s house, and without knowing it, actually did some of things you suggest. So this week I started researching and found your site. These lessons are gonna allow me to practice and gain a little confidence, without the tequila. Thanks!!!

Sadly, there is not such a group where I live but I still want to start drumming a bit on my own and then maybe start one- even get my boys excited about it. What type of drum/s would you suggest for beginners? I don’t know much about drums just very passionate about rhythm.
